Refreshingly antic, this irreverent version of Aesop's fable is written in the style of Italian commedia dell'arte. Using authentic staging and stock characters of commedia—the miserly Pantalone, the bragging Captain, the romantic lovers, the trickster Arlequin, plus an endearing lion—this fable becomes a colorful theatrical experience with zany comedy and the warmth of friendship.
About This Production:
This show is a play for younger audiences with music performed in the style of commedia dell’arte and some actors will perform with half masks. You do not have to have any experience with mask work or commedia to be cast in the show: the ensemble will learn the style through the rehearsal process. Actors with physical comedic skills are encouraged to audition. Singing and music are a part of the play but this is not a typical musical and singers of all levels are welcome.
Character Breakdown:
Androcles (Arlecchino): a young, light-hearted and astute, comedic servant to Pantalone (open to any gender)
Lion: the king of the forest with a terrific roar (male-identifying)
Pantalone: a stingy, elderly, father to Isabella who thinks only of his gold (male-identifying)
Captain: the bragging, cowardly military captain (male-identifying)
Isabella: one of the lovers and daughter of Pantalone (female-identifying)
Lelio: one of the lovers who lives next door to Isabella (male-identifying)
